Witness King Tides

Post date: Dec 11, 2014 12:45:20 AM

King tide events occur every year around the winter solstice when the moon is closest to the Earth. This year they are predicted around the Christmas holiday. When these tides correspond with low pressure system storms, low-lying areas in Birch Bay experience flooding (remember December 2012?). Washington Sea Grant has joined an international effort to "Witness King Tides." King Tides offer an opportunity to visualize how our shorelines might look in the future in the face of rising sea levels. As in years past, the Witness King Tides project invites people to take photos of their shoreline and important places threatened by sea level rise between December 21 - 27. To learn more about King Tides and how you can participate in this project visit their website. Additional information is available at the Department of Ecology's King Tide website.
