Improving water quality is important for recreation, shellfish harvest, and salmon in Whatcom County water bodies. “Due to threats to shellfish harvest, Blaine Public Works has been awarded funds from the Washington Department of Ecology to help keep Drayton Harbor and Semiahmoo Bay clean. It takes resources and effort from all of us to keep our waters clean! Learn about local efforts to improve water quality and enjoy the bounty of Drayton Harbor! Let’s keep our waters clean in 2015.” says Julie Hirsch, Garden of the Salish Sea Curriculum Coordinator.

Join Blaine Public Works, the Garden of the Salish Sea Curriculum, Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, Whatcom Marine Resources Committee, and the Drayton Harbor Oyster Company at the Blaine Water Fest, a free community open house showcasing local best management practices, education and planning efforts, and student artwork from Blaine schools. This free, family friendly event will be fun for all ages.

Learn what work is being done to improve water quality throughout Whatcom County by visiting informational booths from local agencies, organizations, and tribes. There will be kid’s activities, low impact development tours by Port of Blaine staff, boat tours of the Drayton Harbor Oyster Farm, free oysters from the Drayton Harbor Oyster Co., and light refreshments from local businesses. Take a Clean Water Community Challenge for a chance to win tickets to the Seattle Aquarium, a free standup paddle board rental, or a foldable crab trap, and receive a token of appreciation for your participation.
